Guest Speaker: Kanwal Sarai, Simply Investing

3. Our guest speaker is Kanwal Sarai, an Ottawa-based dividend investor who runs an online service called Simply Investing, https://www.simplyinvesting.com. He has a platform that applies his investing approach to more than 6,000 stocks every day and shows you the best stocks to invest in and which ones to avoid.

4. Here are the 10 rules he uses to filter out the best quality stocks that are also priced at a low level. To geta 10 out of 10 grade on his Simply Investing platform, a stock must pass the following 10 criteria:
  • Company must have EPS (earnings per share) growth of 8% or more
  • The EPS must have increased at least 8 times in the last 20 years
  • Company must have dividend growth of 8% or more
  • The payout ratio must be 75% or less
  • Company debt must be 70% or less
  • Avoid companies with a recent dividend cut
  • Company should be actively buying back its own shares
  • Price-to-earnings ratio must be 25 or less
  • Stock must be priced low (undervalued)
  • Price-to-book ratio must be 3 or less
Companies that get an SI Grade of 10 out of 10 have the highest potential for capital appreciation and dividend growth in the long-term, he says.

These companies with the highest SI Grade will provide you with reliable growing passive income from dividends.

Dividend investing is very popular in Canada. Here’s a blog post (June 10, 2024) by Bob Lai, a Taiwanese Canadian who lives in Vancouver and has a dividend portfolio that generates $120,000 a year in dividend income. He has achieved financial independence but doesn’t plan to retire any time soon.

5. We will talk about the new Fantasy Portfolio of mainly growth stocks that we set up two months ago at a club meeting. Tom Loftus, also a member of the Ottawa Share Club club, has sent out charts on our Fantasy Portfolio’s performance in the last month, compared to a few broad stock market indexes. Do we have any volunteers to help him with monitoring the investments?
