3. No guest speaker that night, so we will spend time talking about the new Fantasy Portfolio of mainly growth stocks that we set up at last month’s club meeting. Tom Loftus, also a member of the Ottawa Share Club club, will describe how the members manage their Fantasy Pre-Retirement and Retirement investing Portfolios since 2016. Here’s how it works:
- The members choose the initial stocks.
- The portfolio is monitored on an ongoing basis.
- Changes are made when members suggest trades to improve the portfolio’s performance. The improvement recommendations are voted on by the entire membership and the approved changes are implemented.
These portfolios are designed to demonstrate the real issues members are confronted with when managing their own investments and savings.
“Our current stock contest tends to be a selection of the most popular stock picks at the initiation of the contest and operates on an annual basis,” says Tom.
“The Fantasy Portfolios offer members the opportunity to solve real portfolio issues like seeing a good investment idea and deciding what securities you will sell to implement the new investment proposal. The Fantasy Retirement portfolio has a realistic 4% withdrawal requirement for each year of operation.”
Tom will be sending out charts on our Fantasy Portfolio’s performance in the last month, compared to a few broad stock market indexes. To lessen the load, we’d like to get a few volunteers to help him with monitoring the investments.
Most of our picks have gone up with the overall market, except for TFII: TSX (TFI International Inc., the stock I picked), which had a disappointing first quarter earnings report. Here’s a recent article on TFI from SimplyWallSt.com, which I found on Yahoo! Finance.
We still have questions to answer about how we administer the portfolio:
- Is one portfolio enough? We can augment the growth portfolio with a pre-retirement portfolio, which would be more conservative and hold more fixed-income securities to accommodate mandatory annual withdrawals from registered accounts.
- What kind of securities should we hold in the portfolios? Maybe we can set some criteria for eligible candidates, such as minimum and maximum market capitalization, P/E ratio, consistency in increasing EPS or total earnings each year for a five-year period, dividend yield and so on.
- How shall we vote on making recommended changes to the portfolios? Not every member attends each club meeting. So we may have to get your opinions by email, after the meeting concludes.
- How do we make sure our portfolios are diversified? We want to cover the major industry sectors in Canada and the U.S., so we need to monitor the sector weights regularly and adjust them when necessary.
Just FYI: The Globe Investing Club will be going into its second season in the next month or two. If you’re interested in going head to head with the ROB team, you can sign up at tgam.ca/investingclub. Here’s a link to the article about the club’s return by David Berman in the Saturday Globe on May 18:
