3. Guest speaker: Tim McElvaine, CEO of McElvaine Investment Management Ltd., Victoria, BC
  • Portfolio manager of the McElvaine Value Fund
    • Tim is a Canadian value investor and portfolio manager. He used to work with the late Peter Cundill at Mackenzie Funds. I’ve invited him as a guest speaker to my investing class in the past.
    • Since 1996, the McElvaine Value Fund has a strategy of looking for a 60% discount on a quality stock. The investment approach is categorized as a small cap value blend. The portfolio has about 15 holdings with a market capitalization of between $500 million and $10 billion
    • I think value investing is quite timely now that many large tech stocks have slipped from growth into value territory in 2022. This is where you may be able to see great gains in the upcoming year, such as the Meta stock price surge this month
    • Here’s a webinar Tim did last month, where he talked about the stocks he holds and why he holds them. Come prepared to ask Tim about stocks you follow and whether they qualify as value stocks under his criteria

  • With Gordon's stepping down as chair, we want to lead a discussion about how our  group will operate in the coming year. We'd like to hear your views. I will kick it off tomorrow with some suggestions on the Google Groups email list.
