4. The Canadian cannabis market as an investment in the past five years.
In October 2023, Canada will celebrate five years of cannabis legalization. Back in October 2018, we invited Steve Hawkins, CEO of Horizons ETF, to speak to us about his firm’s innovative ETF offering direct exposure to North American-listed stocks involved with medical marijuana bioengineering and production.
“Canada is the birthplace of ETFs and has been home to many firsts in the industry. The Horizons Medical Marijuana Life Sciences ETF is another made-in-Canada ETF milestone, the world’s first marijuana ETF,” he said.
The Horizons ETF (HMMJ on the TSX), began trading on April 5, 2017. It performed well before Canada’s cannabis market opened in October 2018. But the glory days are far behind us.

The chart in the above link shows that HMMJ had a total loss of 30.68% in the past five years, compared to a 7% gain for the sector equity index.
Here’s a plan. Let’s have a discussion at a future meeting about the disappointing results for cannabis investors so far. Is there a prospect for future gains as the U.S. market opens up?
This might work well in a debate format. We would need volunteers for each side – “Yes, I have faith I will make money on cannabis stocks and will continue holding,” or “No, I don’t think it will ever be a money-making investment and I’ll stay far away.”
Should we invite a Horizons ETF executive to make a return visit to the club? How do Canada’s cannabis stocks and ETFs compare? Any flowers among the weeds?
Here are a few articles you may find useful outlining the Canadian cannabis environment.
