Investment Club Meeting on October 17, 2023 (Webinar)
Ellen's Investment Club (Toronto Central Investment Share Club)
Regular Session
Tuesday, October 17, 2023, 7:00 – 9:00 P.M.
By videoconference
1. New member introduction
- We are expecting about half a dozen students from Ellen’s current Investing for Beginners course at U of T. So let’s have everyone introduce themselves, describe the state of their investing skills and give their reasons for joining this club.
2. Approve Agenda
3. Current member introduction
- Since our club consists of many beginners and a number of very experienced people, let’s ask the “old timers” to say what they have learned about investing after years of buying securities, either with an advisor or on their own.
- Discussion of profitable listings reaching recent 52-week highs or lows and the reasons for such performance.
5. Ellen's Investment Club Stock Contest
- Updated chart by Tom Loftus
- We’ll also look at the Globe and Mail’s stock contest, in which Report on Business readers are competing against the staffers who write about investing. Can you guess which side is ahead?
6. StockChase.com (Ellen Roseman)
- a site that aggregates the top picks and comments by investment experts on BNN Bloomberg’s popular weekday TV show, Market Call. StockChase doesn’t charge for basic information, but sells annual subscriptions for more in-depth information at $100+ a year. If you’re uncertain about buying a stock, you can make up your mind more easily once you read the opinions of dozens of experts over the years.
- Long-time club member Walter Fernandez will rip the veil of secrecy off his stock choices and tell us what he owns in Canadian, U.S. and other stocks, plus his GIC holdings. Two hints: He likes companies that have sticky subscription models (e.g. Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, CNR). And he looks for companies with pricing power (e.g. Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Ferrari and Porsche).
- Club member Patrick Dooley bought Spin Master Corp. (TOY-TSX) close to the IPO in 2015. This Canadian company hit the news when it acquired the Melissa and Doug toy brand for $950 million (U.S.). He may comment on this deal, if he has time to prepare, or he may give an update on another favourite Canadian stock, Dollarama.
7. What members are buying, selling, or watching? What's the best or/and worst move you made recently Would you do anything differently, why/why not?
8. Next meeting: Nov. 21, 2023, 7 to 9 p.m.
9. Adjourn
